Rockwall Veterinarian says, bringing a new addition to the family home has been an enlightening experience. Here I was standing in the entrance to the family room with Jessie, praying quietly that the three bandaleros in front of us were happy we were here. Like a scene from a western movie we stood each of us waiting for the other to make their move, fearless and shaken but no one willing to concede. Not the entrance I had planned for as if reading my mind Ruby, Romeo and Lucy my beloved three cats had become the new boy’s welcoming party.

The newbie was a poodle, a miniature black as the night with an irresistible nature I was sold in an instant. Blinded by love so soon in this meet I was oblivious to the fact that Jessie had never encountered a cat in his life. Absolutely confidant that Jessie would fit in I had forgotten the many travesties written before of homes turned to battlefields in a fight to the death. My thoughts only fixed on this adorable little guy, my mind so convincing that everything would work out. So why are we standing in front of this door, nobody moving not a sound could be heard.

To my sheer delight Romeo the stray that had turned up and never left put his best paw forward and you could almost hear him saying. “Nice to meet you Jessie, welcome home” This took young Jessie by surprise and he jumped back and banged into the door behind him. Next came Lucy who has always seemed like the favourite Auntie in the house with a resounding meow and walked off as if nothing was amiss. Nothing quite prepared me for what was to come as Ruby the resident Queen of the house let out a horrible sounding hiss and proceeded like a tiger stalking its prey in the direction of Jessie who by now I would say was hoping the ground would swallow him up. Who to grab hold of first, this was my dilemma as I opted for Ruby, as she seemed much closer at the time. A matador facing a charging bull seemed almost a better place to be right now as I lifted the Queen high off the ground in a bid to avoid world war three.

That was the first meeting and it has been two weeks since then. I will not say there is peace in the valley, but my sheer determination to have a happy little family is paying off. Romeo is in love with Jessie and follows us halfway down the road where he waits for us to return from the park or a leisurely walk. I truly believe in a spiritual world now where soul mates find each other even if they are different animals. Say what you want but from the first day these two guys had something special and it will always be a beautiful thing to see. Lucy is a sweetheart a little trooper when it comes to her new nephew. Even when he is boisterous she lets out a gentle meow as if to say. That is enough you are getting too rough. It seems to work he generally walks away.

So what of Queen Ruby did she bite the bullet and become Jessie’s friend, do not be disappointed as her stance has remained If Jessie had come into a home with only one other cat my execution may have been different and I would have considered replacing him to avoid potential chaos. But in this case my family being larger than life I have called on some genius to ensure the happiness of them both. Like a mum with a new baby I have used tactics to embrace, the differences between these children that may never be resolved. If your cats and dogs are in the trenches with their guns steadily aimed, remember you love them and god bless you for that.
