“I don’t even know where to begin. First of all, the vet that we were seeing in Mesquite was not as attentive, nor friendly enough to ask questions about our pet. We care and love our Westie as most owners do. We only want the best care for her.

“How To Avoid The Top 6 Common Mistakes When Choosing A Veterinarian That Can Cost You Your Pet’s Life!”

The well being and good health of your animal is extremely important, yet the majority of people have no idea how to go about finding the right vet for their pet.  As with any profession, veterinarians are not all the same and if you don´t choose wisely, you are almost certain to encounter all manner of problems throughout your pet´s lifetime.  Here are just a few tips to help you select the right vet, for you as well as your four legged friend.

  1. Ask for recommendations. Ask around amongst friends, family and neighbors with pets of their own as this is one of the best ways to find a suitable vet. Check out the local breeders or see what information you can glean from the animal shelters. A reliable recommendation means you are half way there.
  2. Check with your state’s veterinary medicine association. Your state´s veterinary medicine association will also be able to advise you. They usually keep a record of licensing information as well as providing continued education for their members. If you have shortlisted two or three vets the VMA will give you details of their certifications and license and will also inform you of any complaints that may have been made against your chosen vets.
  3. Visit the office before bringing in your pet. When you have decided which vet you would like to use, go along to the surgery, without taking your pet with you on this occasion. Have a chat with the staff and take the opportunity to have a quick look around at the facilities on offer. If courtesy from the staff is not forthcoming, or if you are at all concerned about the sanitary conditions, then give this one a miss and find another vet for your pet.
  4. Ask which services will be performed by the veterinarian and which by the technicians. Make sure you are aware of the services to be carried out by the vet in person, and those which the technicians will take care of. Routine tasks are often performed by technicians and as you are putting your pet´s life in their hands, you may want to find out about the training they have had before you do.
  5. Pay attention to how the veterinarian interacts with your pet. When you have cause to take your pet for a visit to the vet, keep a close eye on how the vet interacts with your animal. Although keeping up with the latest medical advancements is essential, it’s equally as important that the vet takes care of your pet in a gentle and compassionate way. If you feel confident that your veterinarian is genuinely concerned with the well being of your pet, the visit is likely to cause as little stress as possible, for both you and your animal.
  6. Trust your instincts. The way your pet is made to feel matters to you a great deal, so if you are in any doubt about whether your pet is getting the very best possible care, then its time to look elsewhere as far as veterinarian services go.

Choosing the right veterinarian can add happy, healthy years to your pet’s life. Take the time to find the right match and you’ll be rewarded with the best quality of life for your companion. Now that you know how to choose a vet…
