Bordetella
Bordetella is one of the agents responsible for some forms of Kennel Cough. Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Several agents can cause Kennel Cough including Bordetella and Parainfluenza. This respiratory disease is often transmitted from dog to dog while boarding at a kennel, at a groomer, or even playing in the park. Dogs come in contact with other dogs who are either sick with, or carriers of, the disease. Even if your pet does not go to a groomer or boarding facility they should still be vaccinated for Bordetella. If they have the opportunity to come into contact with any other dogs they are at risk of developing Kennel Cough.
Signs of Bordetella
- Dry, hacking cough
- Gagging or vomiting after cough
- Nasal congestion
Your puppy should receive their first Bordetella vaccinations at 8 weeks of age and then boostered in 3-4 weeks for full immunity. Your puppy will then be boostered once or twice yearly after that depending on your puppies exposure to other dogs. If you have your puppy groomed or boarded you should have this vaccine administered every 6 months.
