Preventatives

“Who’s At Fault When Your Dog Develops Heartworm Disease? Heartworm Prevention Is A Cheap And Reliable Life Insurance Policy For Your Canine…”

Please note that all heartworm prevention products for dogs require a heartworm test before the dog can be started on prevention and then annually ever year after that.  Puppies are the only exception.  Puppies under the age of six months may be started on heartworm prevention without a test, but will require a test once they reach 1 year old.

Heartworm Prevention Only

Heartgard Plus

Indications:  For use in dogs to prevent heartworm disease and for the treatment and control of roundworms and hookworms.

Dosage for dogs 6 weeks of age and older:

  • Up to 25 lbs. (Blue)
  • 26 – 50 lbs. (Green)
  • 51 – 100 lbs. (Brown)
  • Over 100 lbs. use appropriate combination of sizes listed above

Administration:  Chewable given orally every 30 days.

Interceptor

Indications:  For use in dogs to prevent heartworm disease, control adult hookworms, and remove and control roundworm and whipworm infections.  For use in cats to prevent heartworm disease and remove adult roundworms and hookworms.

Dosage for dogs 4 weeks of age and older:

  • 2 -10 lbs. (Brown)
  • 11 – 25 lbs. (Green)
  • 26 – 50 lbs. (Yellow)
  • 51 – 100 lbs. (White)
  • Over 100 lbs. use appropriate combination of sizes listed above

Administration:  Oral flavor tab given every 30 days.

Combination Heartworm and Flea Prevention

Sentinel

Indications:  Palatable tablet for dogs that prevents heartworm disease, controls flea populations and adult hookworms, as well as removes and controls adult roundworm and whipworm infections.  Sentinel controls the flea population by preventing the development of flea eggs and does not kill adult fleas.

Dosage for dogs 4 weeks and older:

  • 2 – 10 lbs. (Brown)
  • 11 – 25 lbs. (Green)
  • 26 – 50 lbs. (Yellow)
  • 51 – 100 lbs. (White)
  • Over 100 lbs. use appropriate combination of sizes listed above

Administration:  Oral flavor tab given every 30 days.

Advantage Multi

Indications:  Topical solution used for the prevention of heartworm disease and to kill adult fleas on dogs and cats.  For dogs it is also used for the treatment and control of hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms.  For cats it is also used for the treatment and control of ear mites, hookworms, and roundworms.

Dosage for dogs 7 weeks and older:

  • 3 – 9 lbs. (Green)
  • 9.1 – 20 lbs. (Teal)
  • 20.1 – 55 lbs. (Red)
  • 55.1 – 88 lbs. (Blue)
  • Over 88 lbs. use appropriate combination of sizes listed above.

Administration:  Topical solution applied directly to the skin every 30 days.  For dogs under 20 lbs. it should be applied in one spot between the shoulder blades.  For dogs over 20 lbs. it should be applied evenly to 3 or 4 different spots on the top of the back from the shoulders to the base of the tail.   For cats it should be applied in one single spot at the base of the skull.
