“I don’t even know where to begin. First of all, the vet that we were seeing in Mesquite was not as attentive, nor friendly enough to ask questions about our pet. We care and love our Westie as most owners do. We only want the best care for her.

Seizures

Seizures are a brain malfunction which causes your pet’s body to convulse uncontrollably.  They may also cause a loss of consciousness, drooling, uncontrolled urination and accidental pooping.

Seizures are fairly common in dogs, so the most important thing you can do is stay calm.  Remember, your dog depends on you, so you must stay cool to keep them relaxed.

Take the following steps when your pet is having a seizure:

  1. Time the seizure
  2. Make sure there is nothing your pet can hurt themselves on while having the seizure.
  3. Put a rolled up towel under your pet’s head to help keep them from banging their head while having convulsions.
  4. Do not put your hands near your pet’s mouth.  Dogs do not swallow their tongues, so don’t get bit.
  5. Write down the date, time and make a short note about what you noticed about this seizure on a calendar.
  6. Give your pet some karo syrup or honey for its low blood sugar.  Small dogs get 1 teaspoon, medium dogs get 1 tablespoon and large dogs get 2 tablespoons.
  7. Stay with your pet for a while.  They are often confused after a seizure, so remaining with them will make him feel safe and secure.

The first time your pet seizures, your pet should get a physical examination and some blood work as soon as possible after the seizure.  Depending on what we find, your pet may not need to return to us after each seizure.  If your pet is having seizures on a regular basis, having a cluster of seizures, or having seizures that last longer than 5 minutes, medication will need to be started to control them.
