Signs of Dental Issues in Dogs

March 1, 2020
Have you had your dog’s teeth checked lately? Dental problems are one of the most prevalent health issues we see in our canine buddies. Of course, Fido will still be adorable with a crooked smile. However, problems like cracked, broken, or missing teeth; abscesses; gum disease; and infections are no laughing matter. These issues can be both painful and dangerous! A Rockwall, TX vet lists some signs of doggy dental woes below.

Bad Breath

Does Fido’s breath make you cringe when he licks your face? Although dogs may never be known for having minty-fresh breath, extremely foul breath is often a sign of dental problems.

Tartar Buildup

Visible tartar buildup is definitely an indication that your pooch’s choppers need attention. This is often a sign of gum disease, which affects a whopping 80 percent of dogs over aged three. Gum disease is painless at first, but can cause tooth loss and movement as it progresses. Plus, it has been linked to some very serious medical issues, such as heart disease.

Excessive Drool

We know, some of our canine patients are a bit slobbery. However, ropy, bloody, or excessive drool is often an indication of dental trouble.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are another red flag. Keep an eye out for bloody streaks on your furry friend’s toys or dishes.

Swelling

If you every see swelling around Fido’s mouth or head, call your vet immediately. This is often a sign of infections, which, due to the proximity to the brain, is extremely dangerous.

Reduced Interest in Play

Our canine pals use their mouths to play. If Fido’s teeth hurt, his toys could start gathering dust. (It’s also worth noting that dogs can crack or break their teeth by playing with hard objects. Only offer your pooch safe, suitable toys.)

Grumpiness

Toothaches can be excruciatingly painful. Understandably, they aren’t much of a mood booster for either people or pets. If Fido’s teeth hurt, he may act grumpy and/or withdrawn.

Changes in Eating Habits

If your pup’s teeth are bothering him, he may take longer eating, dribble food, start preferring softer food, or not eat as much as he should. This can lead to malnutrition, which can be very dangerous!
