New Year's Resolutions for People With Puppies

January 1, 2021

Happy New Yea r! Are you starting 2021 out with a new puppy? Congratulations! We love watching puppies grow from adorable balls of fur into happy, healthy adults. That first year is a big deal for Fido, however. In this article, a local Heath, TX vet lists some of the things your pet may want to accomplish this year.

Explore My World

Man’s Best Friend is very curious, and loves exploring new places. Take little Fido to lots of parks and trails this year, and let him just enjoy being a dog!

Complete My Petucation

Dogs really do try to please their masters, which is one thing that is so special about them. (Cats, of course, could care less, but that’s another topic.) However, in order to be a good boy, little Fido needs to master basic petiquette. In addition to housebreaking and crate training, your pooch will need to learn basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down.

Make New Friends

Socialization is absolutely crucial for young dogs. It’s important to expose little Fido to new places and faces while he is still young, in order for him to form a ‘pawsitive’ outlook about the world. There’s a short window for successful socialization, so don’t wait!

Meet My Doctor

Your furry friend will need to come in a few times this year. In addition to being microchipped and spayed or neutered, he’ll need his initial vaccinations. A thorough, nose-to-wagging-tail exam is also in order, as are his first rounds of parasite control. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Grow!

Dogs grow incredibly fast in that first year, especially during their first 8 months or so. That massive growth spurt takes a lot of fuel. Proper nutrition is absolutely crucial at this stage of little Fido’s life. Make sure your canine pal is getting good, nourishing pet food.

Work On My Begging Skills

Did you know that dogs have been at our sides for at least 20,000 years? Some scientists estimate that Fido has been with us for up to 40,000 years. Man’s Best Friend has had a long time to perfect that sad, soulful stare, the one that often results in us giving him snacks.
