Keeping Your Dog’s Breath Fresh

August 1, 2022

Did you know that August 6th is Fresh Breath Day? Some of our canine patients could definitely use a bit of help in this area. Man’s Best Friend has many charms, but minty-fresh breath isn’t one of them. Here, a Rockwall, TX vet offers some advice on freshening Fido’s plant-killing doggy breath.

Brushing

Brushing Fido’s mouth is probably the single most effective thing you can do here, not just for his breath but also for his overall oral health. Training will take time, but just go slow, one step at a time, and offer lots of treats and praise. Ask your vet for tips.

Food/Treat Choices

Fido’s breath isn’t the only thing to consider when picking his food and treats, but choosing wisely can make a difference. If your pooch has ongoing issues, your vet may recommend a dental-formula product. You can also offer your pet a Nylabone or chew with some pet toothpaste on it. Crunchy snacks, like carrots and apples, can also help with removing plaque.

Water

Make sure that your canine bff always has fresh, clean water. If you have more than one dog, and/or if Fido has a yard, set out extra water stations.

Dental Products

Nowadays, many pet stores have entire aisles dedicated to doggy dental products. You can get Fido a variety of chews, treats, rinses, and flakes. Ask your vet for specific product recommendations.

Chew Toys

Chewing is Fido’s own form of doggy dental self-care. It keeps your furry pal’s jaws strong, and also helps stimulate the flow of saliva, which washes away the leftover food particles from that doggy biscuit. Provide plenty of safe chew toys.

Veterinary Care

Fido should have his teeth examined annually. This should start when he’s about a year old, as all of his adult teeth should have grown in by then. Contact your vet right away if you notice any signs of dental woes, such as drooling, swelling, bleeding gums, tartar buildup, or sensitivity.

Tongue Brushes

There are some do’s and don’ts here. First, you don’t want to use anything that your canine buddy could possibly choke on. Also, be sure to watch Fido carefully as he is using his tongue brush. Ask your vet for more information.
