Celebrating Thanksgiving With Older Pets

November 15, 2022

Thanksgiving is coming up. While it’s wonderful to gather with our loved ones over a delicious meal, this can be a stressful time for our furry friends, particularly older ones. Fido and Fluffy may need some extra TLC around the holidays. A Rockwall, TX vet discusses celebrating Turkey Day with senior pets below.

Comfort

With older animals, comfort is definitely king. Little things like good grooming and soft beds can go a long way here. Senior pets are very sensitive to weather extremes. Don’t let Fido and Fluffy get too hot or too cold!

A Quiet Place

While some pets barely bat an eye when guests arrive, others get very anxious when visitors arrive. Give your furry retiree a comfy napping spot in a quiet area, so they can avoid the commotion if they like. Offer them bedding, toys, treats, and some form of stimulation, such as a TV show.

Guests

Being handled can be uncomfortable for Fluffy and Fido, as they can get very stiff and sore. Ask visitors not to pick up cats and/or small dogs.

Food

Our animal companions definitely deserve special treats! However, pets in their golden years often have sensitive stomachs, and can get very sick from eating fatty or rich foods. Stick with simple, healthy options, like plain, boneless turkey.

Make It Fun

There’s no reason you can’t make the holiday fun and special for Fido and Fluffy, too. A small gift, such as a new toy or bed, may really brighten up their day!

Stress

Stress is just as bad for pets as it is for us. Dogs and cats tend to be creatures of habit, especially in their golden years. Major changes, such as guests, noise, travel, and changes to schedule or environment, can all upset Fido and Fluffy. Keep an eye on your fuzzy pal, and offer lots of ear scritches and forehead rubs to reassure them. Pet-calming produ cts may be helpful for super-nervous pets. Ask your vet for advice.

Plan Quiet Time

At the end of the day, wind down by spending some quiet time with your beloved buddy. The time we have with our furry best friends often flies by too quickly. Purrs and tail wags from senior pets are definitely something we’re grateful for!
