Bringing Your New Puppy To The Vet

January 15, 2023

Few things that can bring love and joy into our lives the way a new puppy can. Of course, keeping up with little Fido’s veterinary care needs is crucial to getting him started out on the right paw in life. Read on as a local Rockwall, TX vet offers some advice on bringing your puppy in to meet his doctor.

Schedule It Immediately

One of the first things you’ll want to do when you bring your little buddy home is get that first appointment scheduled. Most puppies should get their first checkups and dewormings when they’re about 2-3 weeks old. Then, when little Fido is about 6 to 8 weeks, it will be time to get him started on his vaccinations. Some vaccines need to be given in a series of doses, so you can expect to bring your little buddy in a bit more often during that first year than you normally would. Spay/neuter surgery and microchipping should also be on the agenda for that first year. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Time It Right

If this is little Fido’s first time coming in, try not to book that first visit during peak times, when the waiting room may be full. While it’s important to expose your furry friend to new places and faces, a busy clinic may be overwhelming for the little guy.

Tire Him Out

Fido will be much calmer if he’s already worked off his zoomies. Take time to walk and play with the little guy before his appointment, and tire him out a bit.

Make It Fun

During that first year, you’ll need to work on lots of training. That also included getting your pooch used to going to the vet! Helping your little buddy form a pawsitive impression about going to new places is very important. Bring some small treats along, and perhaps treat your puppy to a fun excursion or a new toy after his appointment.

Work With Him

This isn’t just a matter of manners: if you teach little Fido to accept being held and handled, and having his paws and mouth touched, he’ll be much more accepting of being examined. This is safer for both your pooch and his doctor!
