Mange At Rockwall Veterinary Hospital

Rockwall Veterinarian Treats MangeThis is Gidget, a twelve week old Staffordshire Terrier with dry, crusty, flaky skin that was infected. Gidget was rescued from a kill shelter by Rockwall Pets and came to Pet Doctor – Rockwall Veterinary Hospital, where she was diagnosed with demodex mange after a skin scrape revealed the presence of demodectic mites. Gidget was sent home with an oral anti-mange medications and antibiotics.  She returned after a month for a follow up skin scrape. The second skin scrape revealed that Dr. Webb’s course of treatment eliminated the mites known as demodex canis. As you can see from the before-and-after photo that Gidget is doing great and ready for her forever home.

Demodex mange is caused by microscopic mites that reside deep in the hair follicles and in oil glands. The mites are transmitted to the puppy through direct contact with the mother within days of birth. All dogs have mites in their skin, but a dog with a compromised immune system will cause the demodex mites to do harm.

Demodex canis can cause one or more of the following:

  • Alopecia (hair loss)
  • Itching/scratching
  • Secondary infections
  • Crusty/flaky skin

Fortunately, demodex mange is not contagious to other pets or humans. Bring your furry companion into our one-of-a-kind facility for treatment that will restore your pets’ sanity. Call Pet Doctor at (972) 772-7777 to schedule an appointment.
