Pet Doctor Discusses Hypothyroidism Is Dogs

Pet Doctor Canine Hypothyroidism Veterinary CaseThis is Canela, a 6 year old Redbone Coonhound. Canela was diagnosed with canine hypothyroid disease (a low thyroid level). Since her initial thyroid test came back low, Canela has been taking a thyroid supplement on a daily basis. Canela visited Pet Doctor often during the first few weeks to assure proper thyroid medication dosage. Canela has also been placed on a weight loss diet. Since being on the thyroid supplement and a new low fat/high fiber new diet for just a short period of time, Canela has lost an incredible 10 pounds. Canela is doing well and continues to show overall health improvements.

Hypothyroid disease is one of the most frequent hormonal diseases of dogs. Hypothyroid disease is a condition that arises because of an insufficient level of thyroid hormones in the body. The thyroid gland is minuscule and consists of two glands which are located on opposite sides of the trachea. The thyroid gland controls certain body functions. Functions include bone formation, protein production, metabolism of body fat and oxygen consumption.

Dogs with hypothyroid disease may have one or more of the following signs:

  • Weight gain
  • Dry, dull coat
  • Slow hair growth
  • Skin infections
  • Lameness
  • Increased thirst

Fortunately, there are tests that can diagnosis whether your pet has hypothyroid disease. A simple blood test will be performed to determine if the above symptoms may be caused by hypothyroid disease. If the blood test concludes that your pet has hypothyroid disease, a daily medication will be prescribed for the remainder of your pet’s life. A routine blood test will need to be performed to insure that your pet continues to take the correct dosage.
