Pet Doctor – Rockwall Veterinary Hospital Discusses Dental Month

Rockwall Veterinary Dental Month Before Rockwall Veterinary Dental Month AfterThis is Bell. Bell is a senior dachshund who came in for a professional dental cleaning at Pet Doctor – Rockwall veterinary Hospital. As you can see in the “before” photo, Bell had an abundance of tarter accumulation causing great oral discomfort. Due to the severe case of periodontal disease, multiple teeth extractions were needed as well as a week’s worth of antibiotics and pain medication for the teeth extraction.

Bell is pleased with the work that our staff did. She now has a healthy mouth and studies have shown that by keeping her teeth clean, we can add 2-3 years on to her life expectancy.

Periodontal disease is caused by the bacteria in dental plaque. These bacteria cause an infection in your pet’s mouth that can lead to bad breath, swollen gums, loose teeth, ulcerations, difficulty eating and eventual tooth loss. These bacteria can also travel through the bloodstream to your pet’s vital organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs. Once in these organs, they begin to slowly poison your pet.

Fortunately, there are many measures that you can do to prevent this infection from occurring in your pet’s mouth. Measures include: brushing your pet’s teeth, using water additives, Enzadent Oral Chews, Veggie Dents and yearly professional dental cleanings. All of these measures are designed to control the amount of plaque and tarter buildup.
