Lyme Disease in Dogs

Lyme disease is most commonly transmitted through the bite of a tick.  Dogs cannot pass Lyme disease to humans, but the tick can.  Preventing Lyme disease is a challenge, especially for people who live in rural areas.  It’s best to try to prevent ticks from biting your puppy.  Special products are available for your puppy to protect them from disease carrying ticks; you can purchase these products by calling us at 972-772-7777.   Please check your puppy for ticks after walks in the park or woods and avoid fields and grassy areas.

Signs of Lyme Disease

  • Fever
  • Not eating
  • Lethargy
  • Limping
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain

Your puppy should receive their first Lyme disease vaccination at 8 weeks of age and then boostered in 3-4 weeks for full immunity.  Your puppy will then be boostered once yearly after that.
