Pampering an Older Cat

March 12, 2020
Is your feline friend approaching her senior years? Kitties typically enter their golden years around age ten. Of course, with proper care, Fluffy can live into her late teens or even into her 20’s. However, her needs will change a bit over time. Read on as a local Rockwall, TX vet offers tips on keeping an older cat happy, healthy, and purring.

Beds

By the time Fluffy is a senior, she’ll be a master napper, capable of snoozing up to 20 hours a day. Offer her lots of beds and comfy napping spots to curl up in. Store-bought beds are great, but cats really aren’t very picky here. A soft throw blanket in a box or wicker basket will also work!

Grooming

Older cats sometimes get stiff and sore, which can make it hard for them to reach their entire bodies when grooming themselves. Brushing Fluffy regularly will help keep her fur soft and smooth.

Stimulation

Our feline pals can get quite bored with nothing to do. Offer Fluffy a comfy window seat with a good view, preferably one that includes birds and squirrels.

Senior-Friendly Litterbox

Your furball may have trouble getting in and out of a litterbox with high sides. Consider getting her one with lower walls. If you have multiple floors in your house, keep litterboxes on every level.

Playtime

Your pet won’t be as frisky as she was as a kitten, but she’ll still have the occasional episode of zoomies. Playing with Fluffy regularly will benefit her both physically and mentally. Plus, it’s cute to watch!

Pet Ramps

Senior cats aren’t as mobile or athletic as younger felines. Fluffy may have a hard time jumping up to her favorite spots, or getting on and off the bed. Consider getting pet ramps. You can also arrange ottomans or footstools so your kitty can use them as stairs.

Nightlight

It isn’t uncommon for older cats to develop problems with their vision. Keep a nightlight on after dark, so your furball can find her way around more easily.

Cuddles

Last but not least, pay lots of attention to your kitty. Fluffy will be happiest if she feels loved and safe. Just be very gentle when you pick your pet up and put her down.
