Holiday Safety For Puppies

December 1, 2021

Has a baby dog just joined your household? Congratulations! This is going to be a pretty important month: it’s little Fido’s first holiday season! Of course, you’ll need to take some steps to keep your canine buddy out of trouble. A Rockwall, TX vet offers some advice on this below.

Toxins

Many holiday plants are toxic to dogs. That list includes poinsettias, ivy, holly, mistletoe, and lilies. Put these seasonal favorites in spots little Fido can’t get to.

Decorations

Little Fido will chew on pretty much anything and everything. This is dangerous all year round, which is why puppyproofing is a must, but you’ll need to be extra careful at this time of year. Ribbons, ornaments, ornament hooks, tinsel, lights, and pine needles are just a few things that are dangerous to pets. The gifts themselves can also be dangerous: you don’t want your fuzzy friend eating cardboard, wrapping paper, tape, plastic wrap, or packing peanuts. We also recommend keeping wires out of paws’ reach.

Tree

That pretty tree can also be dangerous to your furry friend. Pine needles are very sharp, and can cause intestinal blockages or perforations if swallowed. The water is another issue. Trees are often treated with fire retardant or pesticides, which could leach into the water. Cover the water bowl, so little Fido can’t drink from it.

Guests

Socialization is crucial to puppies’ mental and emotional development. If you are having people over, ask them to pet and play with little Fido. (You probably won’t have a hard time getting volunteers.) However, too much commotion at once may frighten your furry pal, which could backfire. Keep a close eye on things!

Food

Ask guests not to feed or discipline little Fido without checking first. You don’t want someone giving your pup something that isn’t safe for him! Some dangerous foods include garlic and onions, grapes and raisins, chocolate, avocado, raw dough, alcohol, pitted fruits, and meat on the bone. Ask your vet for more information.

Stress

Structure and routine are very important to little Fido. Try to keep your adorable pet on a steady schedule. Your puppy may need some extra walks, especially if he gets very excited. The holidays can get busy, but it’s important to spend quality time with your canine friend. Remember to take lots of pictures!
