“I don’t even know where to begin. First of all, the vet that we were seeing in Mesquite was not as attentive, nor friendly enough to ask questions about our pet. We care and love our Westie as most owners do. We only want the best care for her.

“How To Avoid The Top 6 Common Mistakes
When Choosing A Veterinarian
That Can Cost You Your Pet’s Life!”

Not all veterinarians are the same, and having the right one can make a big difference in your pet’s health and well-being. Yet most people don’t know how to go about selecting a vet, or even realize the problems that can occur if you don’t choose wisely. Here are some tips that will help you make the right choice for your pet and yourself.

  1. Ask for recommendations. One of the best ways to find a good veterinarian is to ask other pet owners. Consult family, friends and neighbors. You can even check with breeders or ask at the local animal shelter. Getting a referral from someone who’s happy with their veterinarian is a good head start toward finding someone you’ll like.
  2. Check with your state’s veterinary medicine association. Most states have an association that keeps track of veterinarians’ licensing information. These organizations are also the place that provides continuing education for members. Once you have a veterinarian in mind, your state veterinary medical association can provide information about his or her certifications, license and whether he or she has been the subject of any complaints.
  3. Visit the office before bringing in your pet. Talk to the staff and take note of the condition of the facilities. Expect sanitary conditions and a helpful, courteous staff who will take the time to answer your questions. If you don’t find them, look somewhere else!
  4. Ask which services will be performed by the veterinarian and which by the technicians, and find out what kind of training the technicians have had. In most veterinary practices, technicians perform many routine tasks. Since they’ll be caring for your pet, it’s important that they be well trained.
  5. Pay attention to how the veterinarian interacts with your pet. While it is certainly important for your vet to keep current on the latest medical advancements, it’s equally important that they handle your pet with care and compassion. You should always be confident that your veterinarian is concerned for your pet’s well being and strives to make the experience as stress-free as possible.
  6. Trust your instincts. You should be comfortable and confident in the service your veterinarian’s office provides. If you don’t feel that your pet is getting the best possible care, it’s time for a change.

Choosing the right veterinarian can add happy, healthy years to your pet’s life. Take the time to find the right match and you’ll be rewarded with the best quality of life for your companion. Now that you know how to choose a vet…
