Keeping A Senior Dog Healthy

October 1, 2022

Have you noticed gray fur around your dog’s muzzle? Is Fido officially a senior? Dogs somehow manage to become even cuter as they age. They also tend to become very sweet and affectionate in their golden years. However, Fido will need some extra TLC. A local Rockwall, TX vet discusses senior dog care below.

Suitable Exercise

It’s natural for pets to slow down as they age. Fido will tire out more quickly than he used to, and he may become more interested in napping than in chasing Frisbees. However, your pup will still need safe, suitable exercise to stay healthy. For many dogs, this may mean a simple walk around the block. Ask your vet about the type and amount of activity your canine companion needs.

Proper Diet

Nutrition is a big part of your four-legged friend’s care regimen. Fido’s nutritional needs will change over time. Your pooch may also benefit from certain supplements, such as glucosamine. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Weight Control

Obesity is quite common in older dogs. It can also become a bit of a downward spiral, as the heavier Fido gets, the harder it will be for him to move and stay active. Keep a close eye on your furry pal’s weight, and don’t go overboard with treats.

Veterinary Care

Fido will benefit from more frequent appointments as he ages. Just like people, dogs become more susceptible to certain health issues as they grow older. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Mobility

It will slowly get harder for your furry friend to climb stairs or get in and out of cars. Pet ramps can help a lot with this. Keeping those nails clipped is also important.

Comforts

Fido will get stiff and sore as he ages. He’ll need a good, thick bed, so he can rest comfortably. (Note: we recommend orthopedic beds.) Your pooch will also become more sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Take extra care with him when it’s hot or cold out.

Attention

Pay close attention to your canine buddy, and spend time with him every day. This can help make it easier to spot signs that something is wrong. Plus, all Fido wants is to spend time with you! Savor this special time with your furry bff.
