Reasons To Play With Your Cat

February 28, 2023

Cats are always cute, but these lovable little balls of fur are never quite as entertaining as when they are hard at play. Your tiny lion is very dedicated to keeping her hunting skills up to par … or up to purr. Why not help her out a bit? Actually, playing with your feline pal is one of the best things you can do for her! A local Rockwall, TX vet lists some reasons to play with your cat in this article.

Exercise

Cats need proper activity to stay healthy, just as people do. However, Fluffy becomes more inclined in catching Z’s than in catching mice as she grows older. Even a few minutes of running, jumping, and pouncing will do your furball a world of good.

Bonding

When you hold a laser pointer or feather pointer for Fluffy, she’ll know that you’re making an effort to entertain her and keep her happy. That’s definitely going to score you some points! You’ll be rewarded with purrs and cuddles, and, of course, head bonks. Playing can also help cats bond to each other. If you’ve recently adopted a second kitty, or even a third, try playing with your furry friends together. If your furballs realize that fun things happen when they’re together, they may warm up to each other.

Mental Health

Playing is fun for Fluffy, but it also offers stimulation for her mind. Kitties have to focus on those tricky run/jump/pounce combinations! That mental stimulation is actually very important for cats, especially as they age. Think of it as similar to doing a crossword puzzle or playing a card game.

Kitty Angst

Just like people, cats can feel things like fear, anxiety, and depression. Playing can be a wonderful and healthy way for your furry buddy to unleash any pent-up angst she’s stewing on, such as when she’s annoyed with the kitty across the street.

Comedy Relief

Don’t think of playing with your cat as a chore. Chances are, you’ll have fun as well. It’s hard not to chuckle at Fluffy when she’s doing that silly butt-wiggle/run/jump/pounce routine. One thing we can say for sure about our feline friends: they do provide us with live entertainment!
