Work Like A Dog Day

August 5^th is Work Like A Dog Day. This occasion is meant to recognize those hard workers who go above and beyond at their jobs. It’s not hard to see where the saying ‘Work like a dog’ came from. Our canine companions have been performing various jobs for us since we first domesticated them, which may have been as far back as 30,000 years ago. Breed Specific

According to the AKC, there are 200 different dog breeds, with more being added all the time. (The newest is the Bracca Italiano.) While many newer breeds are best suited to being pets, traditionally breeders worked to enhance traits that helped Fido perform specific tasks. Those ancestral jobs still profoundly affect dogs’ appearance and personality. For instance, the Labrador Retriever’s webbed paws and love for swimming were crucial for his first job: retrieving water fowl. The Border Collie, on the other hand, is known for his intelligence. Originally a herding dog, this pup learned that, in his line of work, he had to think ahead of the animals he was herding and protecting. Many smaller dogs, such as the Yorkie, were originally hunters. They may have decided to be pets, but still have strong prey drive.

What Do Working Dogs Do Today?

Today, Man’s Best Friend can be found working in many different fields and industries. Fido is often found working as an assistance dog or a service dog, but he also excels at tracking, detection, protection, and, of course, emotional support. Some pups, such as Beagles, even make their living sniffing out bedbugs!

Fido’s Job Philosophy

If we were able to ask our canine companions about their personal rules for working, what do you think they would say? It’s probably safe to assume that Fido would be very adamant about getting a good night’s sleep and eating a nourishing breakfast (or three). He may also want to remind us about the importance of staying hydrated and taking regular breaks. Another important doggy work ethic? Do something that you both love and are well-suited for. A Pomeranian isn’t going to make a great guard dog, but may be absolutely wonderful in the role of a therapy pet.
